Weekend • December 3, 2005

The number of third-generation mobile subscribers in Singapore has more than doubled in four months, according to latest data from the Infocomm Development Authority.

As at end-October, Singapore's total 3G customer base stood at 96,900, compared with 37,500 in July.

The total number of 3G customers is higher than IDC Asia/Pacific's initial projections. In the middle of this year, the IT and telecom research firm said that Singapore was expected to have some 80,000 3G subscribers by the end of the year.

At the last earnings results for the period ended Sept 30, SingTel said that it had more than 30,000 3G subscribers, while StarHub said that it had 22,981 3G customers and MobileOne (M1) reported 12,500 3G subscribers.

SingTel and M1 both launched their 3G services in February, while StarHub started offering 3G in April. — Dow Jones
