Symantec refuses to sell audit tool outside the US By John Leyden Published Friday 25th November 2005 12:12 GMT Exclusive Symantec has stopped selling a password auditing tool to customers outside the US and Canada, citing US Government export regulations. A Reg reader who works for a large UK supermarket was this month unable to buy a copy of LC 5, a tool developed by @stake prior to its recent acquisition by Symantec. LC 5 is the commercial version of a password auditing / breaking tool better known as L0phtCrack. "A month ago I could have bought it from the @stake web site, that website has gone and the product has not appeared on the Symantec web site. I inquired if I could purchase the product, only to be told that it will only be sold to US and Canadian customers," our correspondent informs us. "I guess I'll just have to go back to using John the Ripper." Symantec's restrictions recall the dark days of the crypto wars when users outside the US were no

Never try to outsmart a woman!

Never Try To Outsmart A Woman There was a man who had worked all his life, had saved all of his money, and was a real miser when it came to his money. Just before he died, he said to his wife, "When I die. I want you to take all my money and put it in the casket with me. I want to take my money to the afterlife with me." And so he got his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he died, she would put all of the money in the casket with him. Well, he died. He was stretched out in the casket; his wife was sitting there in black, and her friend was sitting next to her. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said, "Wait just a minute!" She had a box with her; she came over with the box and put it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket down, and then rolled it away. So her friend said, "Girl, I know you weren't fool enough to put all that money in there with your husband."

Life Reversal?

Dear Husband, I'm writing you this letter to tell you that I'm leaving you for good. I've been a good woman to you for seven years and I have nothing to show for it. These last two weeks have been hell. Your boss called to tell me that you had quit your job today and that was the last straw. Last week, you came home and didn't notice that I had gotten my hair and nails done, cooked your favorite meal and even wore a brand new negligee. You came home and ate in two minutes, and went straight to sleep after watching the game. You don't tell me you love me anymore, you don't touch me or anything. Either you're cheating or you don't love me anymore, whatever the case is, I'm gone. P.S. If you're trying to find me, don't. Your BROTHER and I are moving away to West Virginia together! Have a great life! Your EX-Wife ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... Dear Ex-Wife Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It's true that you a

Idea for wife's birthday

A husband was in big trouble when he forgot his wife's birthday. His wife told him "Tomorrow there better be something in the driveway for me that goes from zero to 200 in under 10 seconds". The next morning the wife found a small package in the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Funeral arrangements for the husband have been set for Saturday.

Game for e-Olympics? Gonna be a no sweat competition!

Cyber Athletes Vie for Global Attention By N Suresh SINGAPORE: A modern version of Olympics is taking shape now. In the digital age, it is the turn of e-Olympics and the participants are the new breeds of 'Cyber Athletes.' However, the only difference between them and their regular counterparts who sweat through the competition in a variety of field games is that all the action at the 'e-Olympics' is on computer screens. There is no lack of intensity. There are thousands of spectators, mostly young men and women who have come to cheer their teams, from countries around the world, just the way it happens in the traditional Olympics. And the players are playing for the sake of national pride. Over 700 young “cyber athletes” from 67 countries are pitting their computer gaming skills against each other at the fifth edition of the World Cyber Games 2005 at the SunTec convention center here. After the traditional inaugural ceremony, on 16th November, accompanied by hip hop

Deadly Viruses prompted serious thoughts in BCP & DRP

HP opens Tech Recovery Centre AMERICAN computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) has opened a vast IT facility in Singapore that will allow companies access to computers if a major disaster like an earthquake strikes and causes prolonged power cuts. The facility at Science Park II, HP's second in Singapore, is 21,000 sq ft in size - that is about 200 basketball courts - and able to service up to 100 companies. About half of the area has been built, with the remaining space available for expansion. The centre was officially opened last week by the chief executive officer of the Infocomm Development Authority, Mr Chan Yeng Kit. The two HP centres here host about 70 mostly high-profile businesses, including multinational corporations, banks and online retailers. Ms Jane Rushton-Young, HP's regional business development manager for business continuity and availability service, said Singapore was chosen for the company's seventh such centre in the Asia-Pacific region because of its ex

Internet Under Surveillance?

Image
The 15 enemies of the Internet and other countries to watch Reporters Without Borders marks the World Summit on the Information Society by presenting 15 countries that are “enemies of the Internet” and pointing to a dozen others whose attitude to it is worrying. The 15 “enemies” are the countries that crack down hardest on the Internet, censoring independent news sites and opposition publications, monitoring the Web to stifle dissident voices, and harassing, intimidating and sometimes imprisoning Internet users and bloggers who deviate from the regime’s official line. The “countries to watch” do not have much in common with the "enemies of the Internet." The plight of a Chinese Internet user, who risks prison by mentioning human rights in an online forum, does not compare with the situation of a user in France or the United States. Yet many countries that have so far respected online freedom seem these days to want to control the Internet more. Their often laudable aims inc

WHAT HAPPENED TO EMILY?

' The Exorcism of Emily Rose' is a well-crafted, creepy film that explores profound questions about the nature of God. Does He exist? Do you really want to know? The film raises and addresses profound questions about the nature of evil but doesn’t pretend to answer them. When Catholics get a toothache, they’re supposed to go to the dentist—not to Lourdes. If a holy priest cannot expel the forces of evil, then one begins to wonder: Which side is really stronger, after all? '...God Himself endured that—if you believe in the incarnation.' Christian Faith v|s "The Exorcism of Emily Rose"

Image
1. Do you believe Christians can be possessed? If not, then how do you account for Emily's alleged possession? Is it just psychological? Does it mean she is not a Christian? What about the explicitly Catholic visions she says she has? 2. Do you believe possessions can be influenced by the drugs people take, as Dr. Adani says? What do claims like hers say about the relationship between soul and body? 3. Do you think the film is balanced or neutral? Or does it favor one side over the other? (Consider the opening shot of blood dripping from barbed wire, which reflects the "skeptical" view of Emily's condition; also consider the way Erin seems to be haunted by the same forces that haunted Emily.) If you did not know that the film was co-written and directed by an evangelical Christian, would you have been able to tell just from watching the film? 4. Is there a place for skepticism in Christian faith? How do you respond to Ethan's charge that Father Moore believes in s

Movie Review: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Image
Review by Peter T. Chattaway The Exorcism of Emily Rose begins on an ominously moody note. A man comes to a farm covered in snow and frost, and for a moment, he simply observes the environment around him. Cats run by in the distance. Wasps buzz around a nest attached to the local farmhouse. A priest looks out from a window on the top floor. Then a woman steps outside and asks, "You're the medical examiner?" The man comes inside, walks upstairs, and enters a bedroom—and before the door closes, we catch a glimpse of a police officer's badge. This sequence is impressive partly because it relies so strongly on visuals. Most of the rest of the film, for better or worse, is preoccupied with words, and even its strongest visual moments are guided by, and framed within, the narration of its characters. The movie is loosely based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a German student who believed she was possessed by demons, and whose death during an attempted exorcism i

'Exorcism' goes beyond demons

Image
By PAUL DORO For all its horror-movie trappings, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is more of a courtroom drama, it is provocative, intelligent and an absorbing film. It also happens to be based on a true story. After a young woman named Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) dies following an exorcism, a priest (Tom Wilkinson) is charged with negligent homicide, despite having permission from Emily, her parents and the local archdiocese to perform the exorcism. The prosecutor (Campbell Scott) contends that Emily died of malnutrition and that the priest is directly responsible for her death. The priest is defended by an attorney (Laura Linney) who, a self-described agnostic, only accepts the case after she's promised a partnership for a job well done. Emily Rose's story is told through flashbacks during the trial. Raised in a devout family in the countryside, she wins a full college scholarship and finds herself in the bright lights of the big city. A seemingly normal st

Mystery Eyes?

Image
Looking over a prolonged period on a bright colour, in this case violet, it will "imprint" on our retina creating the opposite colour, in this case green. So constant staring at the same spot will superimpose the green colour which had already been "imprinted" on our retina and causing green & violet to "combine" giving us full colour, which is white. However, it appears grey because it is intensity difference only, between white and grey... Cool..... If you continue to focus on the cross in the center of the image you will notice that .... the circle of violet circles will soon DISAPPEAR completely .. and you will see only the green spot (which is actually violet) **Actually violet is the almost "opposite" colour of green.
