Same number wins both 2nd and 3rd 4-D prizes!

IT IS a one-in-a-hundred-million chance that a 4D number appears twice in a row.

But it happened on Sunday, and several lucky people who bought the number 2096 won two payouts - for its being both the second and third prize number.

Singapore Pools, which conducts the 4D draw, said this was the first time in 20 years that the same number had won the second and third prizes.

The actual number of winners and total amount paid out cannot be disclosed, but Singapore Pools confirmed that lucky winners have already come forward to claim their extra-plump windfalls.

One such lucky person who bought 2096 placed a $2 'big' bet and a $3 'small' bet.

He won $11,380 - $8,000 for the second prize and $3,380 for the third prize.

The total amount is only slightly less than the $13,000 he would have won had the number emerged the first prize for the same stake.

The winning number is picked at random by a draw machine.

Before each draw, a purpose-designed computer program is run to randomly select the draw machine and the set of draw balls to be used.

The machine, which comprises four separate transparent cylinders, is then activated by a member of the public with the push of a button.

One ball numbered zero to nine is extracted from each of the four cylinders.

After a winning number is selected, the balls are replaced before the next winning number is picked.

The public draw, which usually attracts about 200 members of the public, takes place at the Singapore Pools' Head Office at Paradiz Centre.

A Singapore Pools spokesman said such occurrences were highly unlikely, though not impossible.

'We do have such cases happening, but it's very rare, especially for the same number in the top three prizes.'
